The Sleeper and the Spindle – Neil Gaiman

Last week I got surprise mail (everyone loves surprise mail) – a gift from the book fairy!

My lovely friend had seen my post about how much I love Neil Gaiman and because she is wonderful, she sent me her spare copy of The Sleeper and the Spindle, an absolutely gorgeous retelling of Sleeping Beauty. It’s short – it’s a perfect bedtime story – and the beauty carries through from the amazing cover art (I wanted to colour it in) to the writing, to the quirky twists in the classic tale.  Gaiman subtly addresses the issues of feminism in classic fairy tales, as well as subverting the stereotypes of these well known characters. The illustrations carry through the whole book, on every page, and the narrative has that gorgeous turn of phrase which makes reading Gaiman’s work such a pleasure.

In short, this is a purely wonderful nugget of magic from the Book Fairy. Thank you, Book Fairy!
